2010 BEDFORD FOURS AND EIGHTS HEAD

The City of Oxford Men’s, Women’s and Junior squads put in an excellent showing at the Bedford Eights and Fours Head on Sunday 14 February 2010.  With six top times out of 12 entries, and some new glassware on the shelf, it was great to see the dedication to winter training paying off.

The Women’s Tier 1 squad made an impressive mark on the competition, taking out the title of fastest women’s crew of the day in the WIM2 8+, beating the nearest rivals Bedford and Abingdon Rowing Clubs, and the Magdalen College BC WIM1 8+, by over 17 seconds in a time of 6.57.

The City women also dominated the fours, taking out all of the the senior and intermediate coxed fours events.  The WSEN 4+ showed their strength in a time-only event, clocking in at 7.27.  The WIM1 4+ was close behind, defeating a Milton Keynes RC crew by 21 seconds, to win in 7.32.  City of Oxford took the double in the WIM2 4+ event, with the junior girls crew finishing 1 second ahead of the seniors to take 1st and 2nd place.

The Junior girls had further success in sweep events, winning the WIM3 4+ 18 seconds ahead of Abingdon RC.  They showed their speed in the sculling events, winning the WIM3 4X over Staines BC and Putney High in 7.15, and came in 2nd place in the WJ18 4X, just 1 second behind the Putney High crew who they had earlier beaten.

Our Men’s squad put in some fast times in the IM2 8+, IM3 8+ and NOV 8+ events, and the junior boys battled it out against some strong club crews to take 6th out of 12 in the IM3 4+.

Many thanks to the coxswains for their super bridge-avoiding and motivating coxing, our coaches for their time, support and trailer driving, and parents and friends for their loud and enthusiastic cheering.

Paul Hiscock – or ‘Hissie’ as he was affectionately known by many – sadly passed away in November 2006 and was a much-valued friend of all of us at City of Oxford Rowing Club.  His contribution to the club and our members was huge and so it is with much pleasure the club announces the naming of a new eight that we have been able to buy in his memory thanks to extremely generous donations from Paul’s friends, family and colleagues. Please join us and Paul’s family in celebrating Paul’s contribution to us all at the naming, which will be followed by a buffet lunch in the club bar.
